Are you confused over which career path to choose, what steps to take, where to learn? Well if the task seems so frightening even to read about, let’s consider a simpler task. How about making yourself adaptable to any career you would choose for yourself? This article will elaborate on how successful individuals mould their careers and the basic skills they possess which enable them to make these decisions.
How does a career take shape?
Careers in the past were comparatively more secure, predictable and seldom required planning. Today, a plethora of career options is open to the young generation. However these careers demand multiple skills, planning and could be short term - at least in the initial stages. But how does a career take shape in these turbulent times? Let’s look at an example.
The author of this article knows a student who completed his bachelors in chemical engineering from Nagpur and masters in the same subject from USA. During masters, this student worked on a project with a medical school. The project involved some mathematical modeling wherein coupled with the knowledge of chemistry and biology, he also applied knowledge of computer programming that he had learned during his bachelors.
This project and the two years of intensive postgraduate studies transformed him into a chemical engineer possessing the knowledge of biology and a strong computer experience. After passing out, he joined a pharmaceutical company as a Computational Drug Designer. The company was looking out for a chemical engineer having the knowledge of statistics, computers and biology. Now who could have been a more perfect fit than this student?
Overtly, this might appear to be a flawlessly molded career. Let’s look at the story again. The student, who we referred to, “had no interest” in chemical engineering, however pursued it because “he had no choice.” Likewise he also pursued the masters in the same subject because “it was logical” to do so. On the other hand, he learned computer programming because “he was passionate” about it. In all, he made it a point to make the most of whatever came along and excelled in every examination.
Wait, there is more!
A year after his SUCCESSFUL stint at the pharmaceutical company, he realized that Research is not his passion and cannot be a life long affair. Conversely, the business aspect of the drug designing especially the venture capital in the biotechnology industry caught his interest. He then figured out that his knowledge of the biotechnology industry coupled with an MBA in Finance would be a definite qualification to get into this challenging and multidimensional field. To strengthen his business school application and gain core knowledge in finance, he is now working as a business data analyst with a marketing company and also pursuing the Chartered Financial Analyst course in USA. If he succeeds, which is highly likely, his career decisions would appear logical and correct in retrospect. Let’s leave it to time.
But the fundamental questions remain – What enabled this individual to make and then carry through these “logical” and “obvious” career decisions? Why not each one of us does the same? May be, before and during his journey, the student in discussion, identified and developed a set of skills, attitudes and habits, which many of us comfortably ignore to build.
Preparing the ground
Browse through the success literature and you will be presented with innumerable suggestions about the qualities and skills one should possess to be successful. If you are not discerning enough, chances are that you would get entangled in the theory rather than get inspired to take a constructive action. Hence let’s not discuss perseverance, determination, commitment, hard work, confidence and so on. Instead, following succinct points should help you prepare a ground as you carve a career path for yourself.
English Language
Have you come across articles, which quote that on a global play field India has an advantage of an English speaking population? But how many of us can really utilize the English language to our benefit? Can you understand spoken and written English well? Can you read and enjoy good books written in English? Even if you read, do you read those books till the end or do you leave those halfway on the pretext of boredom. May be in reality, you find the book unexciting due to your inability to comprehend it. How much knowledge and pleasure we deny ourselves when we fail to make the efforts to study English (or for that matter any other language)? A daily ritual of reading quality newspapers & magazines, listening to the news, writing a page, would over a period equip you to understand more things in a better way. A formal English enhancement program, which transcends beyond mere spoken English, may also prove helpful.
Reading
The world is getting competitive and those with knowledge and information shall lead, period. Unfortunately acquiring knowledge is still viewed as a chore to be undertaken with the sole intention of getting through university examinations. Quite the opposite, reading widely is a way to transform a flood of information into knowledge and using it to advance in ones life. Articles and books covering business, finance, technology, current events, should be sought after. Reading business books, say, would help you understand the way organizations work, the different aspects of a business viz. personal selling, HR policies and business confidentiality. This in turn would give you a wider perspective while choosing a career path. Along with academic studies, establish a habit of reading voraciously. Once inculcated, the habit of reading effectively for two or three hours a day should then be followed religiously.
Interpersonal Skills
Are you among those graduates who are eager to pursue professional degree courses as a quick fix to a great career? But, have you worked upon your Interpersonal skills? Your success in a professional course and a subsequent career would depend largely upon how effectively you interact with others, handle office politics and how assertively you deal with difficult colleagues. Sans this skill, talented & hard working individuals end up fighting interpersonal conflicts at work places at the cost their career ambitions nurtured since long. Taking up a job during (or after graduation) or giving oneself an opportunity to sharpen this skill would prove helpful in the long run.
Communication
It is said that the way we communicate to others and ourselves determines the quality of our lives and career. This communication could be in any form viz. your conversation with a colleague, your body language, a request, a letter, an email, a speech, your application for a job and even your internal dialogue. Strive to control the way you listen and speak. During conversations, avoid fruitlessly referring to the past, bring conversations to the present and suggest future possibilities to get desired results. If you make a request, say exactly what you want, when you want and whom you want it from. Your perception of yourself determines your confidence and your abilities. Hence replace negative internal dialogue with positive self-images and try to internalize the same in your daily conversations with yourself. However do not fall in trap of “techniques”. Focus more on the result than on the tool.
Passion
Somewhere I read, “Being passionate is God saying Hallo!” Be passionate about, say, your hobbies, your studies and your dreams. Learn everything under the sun about it. Don’t be amazed when this habit puts you in the top league in your career. Be focused, joyous and passionate in whatever you do and you will perhaps never require a manual to teach you How to build an Impressive Personality.
In his autobiography- Every Street is Paved with Gold- Kim Woo Chung, the founder director of Daewoo quoted “Be humble and learn. We don’t need people who merely stand around looking good.” The message is clear. Get going. Who knows, some day, the path you travel may inspire thousands.
And it would all appear so obvious!

The Institute library is housed in a building of 55,000 sq ft Carpet area spread over four Floors. It serves users on all the days except on three National Holidays. Most of the library activities are computerized using "LlBSYS", an integrated library software package.
IIMB encourages the use of its library for professional purposes. Individuals and Organizations can use the library regularly either on a deposit or non-deposit basis on payment. The library brings out several publications for reference purposes. Some of the major services rendered by the library are reference, reprographic, bibliographic, document delivery, Data Search Facilities, resource sharing with other libraries etc. It also networks with libraries of leading institutions to offer reference, indexing and bibliographic services.
The library has a total collection of 2.09 lakh documents (books, back volumes of journals, government publications, technical reports, conference proceedings, non-book materials etc.,). The library subscribes to around 34 online databases, 695 print journals and 850 e-journals. It also receives around 150 Newsletters and has 2200 Annual Reports from public and private organizations. The Non book materials collection includes 4125 CDs, 415 Video Cassettes, 310 VCDs & DVDs and 235 Audio Cassettes etc.

IIMB has one of the finest computing environments among management institutions in the country. Operating round the clock, with a large number of desktops (more than 450 PCs), world-class servers and a campus wide network with access to Internet, it represents the major attraction of IIMB. The campus network links the computing resources in the faculty offices, student labs, administrative units, student hostels, management development center and the faculty residences as well. Internet bandwidth of 2 MBPS (plus 64 KBPS) provided by the Software Technology Park supports Internet access to every desktop in the campus.IIMB’s computing infrastructure offers a truly heterogenous range of hardware and software platforms for the student to appreciate and gain wide-ranging experience.
The desktop environment is dominated by world class workstations from the "best of the breed" manufacturers. Programmes
At present, IIMI offers the following programmes and plans to introduce some more programmes from the next academic year.
1. The Post Graduate Programme (PGP) is a two year programme which offers, on its successful completion, a "Post Graduate Diploma in Management".
2. Management Development Programme (MDP) is targetted at developing the managerial skills of the people from various sectors of the industry. The duration of each course ranges from a week to a fortnight. They are held throughout the year.
3. Executive Post-Graduate Programme (Exe-PGP) is an 18-month programme, designed for working executives.
4. Fellow Programme in Management (FPM) in management is a four/five years programme .It is designed to provide both breadth and depth of knowledge to doctoral participants in management. Besides these, there are over 1000 selective e-journals available in full-text through reputed publishers such as blackwell, John Wiley, Sage, ACM, Elsevier, Kluwer, and Taylor & Francis.
Videos: Educational videos from BBC, Harvard, INSEAD, Stanford Business School, etc. are available for consultation in the library.

The one thing which gives the students of IIM-I, a chance to recharge their batteries between the tight schedule of studies, are the sporting facilities on campus. If you think that you might not get time to play during the day and what may stop you from playing at night is poor light, you are mistaken!!!!!
Midnight cricket is one example where you can see constraints making way for fun. Floodlights come on - and here you have people playing anything from cricket to basketball till the wee hours of the morning. For the sports enthusiast, every hostel block has its own basketball and badminton court along with a common room where you can play a variety of games from table tennis to chess. The fully equipped gym is a place where you have all facilities to help you keep fit, right from advanced machines to latest music.
With a huge picturesque campus and sylvan surroundings, the campus is a great place to jog and exercise. Regular tournaments are held throughout the year, which keep the enthusiasm of participants high and give them a chance to compete among themselves. Apart from these regular tournaments, the institute has its own annual sports week; Ranbhoomi. Though you have ample opportunities to work in a team for academic purposes, this is a totally different ball game; when you face the competition in inter batch matches conducted during Ranbhoomi. Multiple prizes make the competition intense and exciting. In all a great place to bring out your sporting skills, provided you make time to bring them out!!!!!

1. The Post Graduate Programme (PGP) is a two year programme which offers, on its successful completion, a "Post Graduate Diploma in Management".

Situated at the outskirts of the historic and culturally rich city of Lucknow, the Indian Institute of Management (IIML), was established in 1984, by the Government of India, as a national level school of excellence in management science.
IIML 's mission is to be a global, socially conscious and integrated school of management, contributing towards management development, both in India and abroad. Towards this, IIML undertakes a diverse range of academic activities and interventions aimed at creation, dissemination, and application of management knowledge and practices. Curriculum:
The curriculum is designed to impart knowledge and skills considered essential for managers to operate successfully in the increasingly dynamic and complex environment. It sharpens and deepens the student's understanding at different levels:
The individual in the organisational setting; The environmental context of the organisation; The dynamics of organisational functioning; and The analytical tools and techniques required in the management of organisation effectively Understanding the interdependent nature of organisational dynamics and its managerial implications is the basic thrust of the curriculum. It helps the student acquire conceptual and analytical abilities required for making and implementing managerial decisions effectively.
The First Year academic work, spread over three terms, is a compulsory package of 22 foundation (core) courses designed to provide basic knowledge of concepts, tools and techniques in various functional areas and relevant disciplines.
The two-month compulsory Summer Training in industrial and business organisations follows the first year course work. The summer training is aimed at providing exposure to the real life working environment. Students are required to work on specific, time-bound organisation related assignments.
The Second Year academic work, spread over three terms, comprises two compulsory courses of integrative nature along with a package of 15 elective courses of advanced and applied nature. These provide students the opportunity to develop in depth understanding and concentration in the areas of their special interest. The students can also take up to two Courses of Independent Study (CIS) as elective, or one Dissertation Project which is equivalent to two elective courses spread over Term-V and Term-VI.
The entire package of courses is regularly reviewed, modified, updated and augmented keeping in view the industry requirements, latest developments in the specific subject areas and changes in the social and geo-political scenario that impinge on the management practices.

Marketing Management I: This first course on Marketing Management introduces the important role of marketing in the company. Major topics covered in the first course are : Analyzing the marketing environment and consumer behavior; identifying market segments and selecting target markets; differentiating and positioning the market offer; developing , testing and launching new products and services; managing product life cycles and strategies; managing product lines and brands and designing pricing strategies and programs.
Marketing Management II : This course provides additional concepts in Marketing in areas related to distribution and selection of channels, modern retailing, integrated marketing communication, advertising and sales promotion. Topics covered also include Market Research, demand estimation, rural marketing, international marketing and marketing implementation.
FINANCE AND ACCOUNTING
Management Accounting I: The course is designed to provide an understanding of the role and relevance of accounting function in an organization and also the basic concepts, techniques and methodologies relevant to the accounting function. The course covers Preparation of Accounting Records and Systems, Depreciation Accounting, Inventory and Goodwill Valuation methods, Intangible Assets, Legal Requirements and Understanding and Analysis of published Annual Reports. It also includes Auditing and Ratio Analysis.
Management Accounting II: The objective of this course is to provide an understanding of the basic elements, concepts and systems of cost accounting and the use of costing information in managerial decision-making.
Financial Management I: How do organizations manage their financial resources? This course enables the students to find the answer to this question by familiarizing them with Fund Flow Analysis, Working Capital Management, Cash and Receivables Management, Money Markets and Instruments, Factoring and Commercial Papers.
Financial Management II: The course is designed to provide an understanding of the financial policies and issues of an organization. The major emphasis of the course is on financing, investment and distribution decisions. Operations Management I: As the first course in Operations, Operations Management I provides an understanding of different manufacturing and service organizations and awareness of Operations Management as a major functional area of management.

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY AND SYSTEMS
Information Technology for Management: The phenomenal growth of information technology usage in almost all types of organizations has created tremendous change in methods and procedures in information collection and dissemination techniques, in management control processes, and in decision making activities. In fact, most of the functional areas of corporate world, require managers with capabilities to effectively utilize information technology.
This introductory course on Information Technology exposes students to the present day capabilities and limitations of Information Technology. The course provides exposure and basic familiarity with the increasingly prevalent paradigm of Visual Programming: where a user works with a library of pre-fabricated objects and functions, ties them together with logic using visual techniques to produce a program to achieve the desired application results.
Management Information Systems: The course is designed to enable the students to appreciate the role of information systems in managerial decision making; familiarize them with information systems design methodologies, hardware/ software tools and technology available for implementation of effective organizational information systems. It helps them to appreciate the critical role of managers in design of effective information systems.
BUSINESS ENVIRONMENT
Economics I: The first of the two courses in Economics aims at familiarizing the students with the fundamental economic principles in the context of managerial decision making. It deals with micro economic issues involving households and firms, mainly in the areas of Demand and Supply; Production and Cost of Firms; and Price/Output Decisions by firms under varying market conditions.
Economics II: This is a course in macroeconomics, with a focus on the economy as a whole in aggregate terms rather than on the micro units. Starting with the National Accounts, the topics to be covered include National Income Determination and Multiplier Analysis; Business Cycles; Inflation; Monetary and Fiscal Policies to guide the Economy etc.

Legal Aspects in Management: The course is designed to provide an understanding of legal processes involved in management of an organization.

Behavior in Organizations: Understanding the behavior of an individual in organizational setting is a must for a manager. This course tries to inculcate just that. Quantitative Analysis for Management I: The package of courses under Quantitative Analysis for Management are designed to impart understanding of basic concepts, techniques and methodologies for analytical decision making across the spectrum of managerial tasks and functions. QAM-I introduces the student to the world of statistics, probability and linear programming.
Quantitative Analysis for Management II: Topics covered in this course are Methods of Sampling; Index Number and Time Series Analysis; Tests of Hypothesis (concerning one and two populations); Points and Interval Estimation; Analysis of Variance; Measures of Association; Goodness of Fit Test; Non parametric Tests.

Advanced Marketing Research: The objective of this course is to make the students familiar with advanced marketing research tools commonly used in marketing and consumer behaviour research. The contents include: Advertising Budget Decisions (Regression Analysis); Marketing Strategy Formulation (Discriminant Analysis); Questionnaire Development and Advertising Theme Decisions (Factor Analysis); Market Segmentation (Cluster Analysis); Brand and Product Line Decisions (Conjoint Analysis); Strategy Formulation (Multidimensional Scaling).
Promotional Strategy: The Promotional Strategy course will focus on the dual aspects of promotion and advertising decisions and the strategy issues related to these areas. Ad campaign planning will emphasize the creative strategy and media issues. The course will focus on advertising as a medium of communication used by advertisers to increase the persuasive effect of their messages on consumer markets. To this effect, ad copy appeals will be analyzed in detail to ensure that the student of advertising understands the dynamics of ad messages.
Media characteristics will be discussed for their relevance to media selection and scheduling campaigns. The sales promotion component will highlight the promotional techniques used in promoting to consumers and dealers, namely exhibitions, contests, use of coupons, packaging and point-of-purchase displays.
Sales and Distribution Management: The objective of the course is to familiarize students with theories, concepts, techniques and practices related to Sales and Distribution Management. The first part of the course covers Selling and Sales Management, and consists of three modules which deal with selling skills, mid-career sales challenges and advanced sales management.
The second part covers Distribution management and also consists of three modules dealing with the decisions relating to the retail front end, channel intermediaries, and company objectives. The course is aimed at participants who desire to take up a career in marketing, although it will also be very useful for those considering careers in finance and systems.
Customer Relationship Management: The emerging business logic – be it in the Indian or the global environment – has distinctly moved towards underscoring a never before importance of delighting the customer. Bonding with them at every step of the way, and retaining them for a greater profitability has become an organizational priority. The premise is that to earn profit and to sustain competitiveness, a firm does not need to seek a large number of customers. A smaller base of loyal but profitable customers is all that it takes to stay competitive, relevant and commercially profitable. Product Policy and Brand Management: The objectives of this course are to familiarize the students with the new product development process, the research techniques used in this process, launching strategy of a new product, management of the product over its life cycle, product portfolio analysis and management, and brand management. Broadly, the concept of this course would be: Idea Generation; Concept Testing; Concept Evaluation; Product Testing; Packaging Research; Brand Name Research; Sales Promotion Research; Pre-test Marketing and Test Marketing; Launching Strategy for a New Product; Product Life Cycle Management; Product Portfolio Analysis and Management.
The section on brand management shall cover: Concept of branding and function of a brand, the brand identity system, how to build a strong brand on Indian context, brand leveraging strategies, contrasting and brand development in FMCG sector with that of technology products, strategic changes to gain competitive advantage through branding, linking brand equity to market based assets and shareholder value.
Services Marketing: Interest in improving the management of service businesses continues to accelerate. As a result, there is a larger store of knowledge available on service management, not only in marketing but also in functions that necessarily interact with marketing, such as human resources and operations. The economies of the world are now dominated by services. Furthermore, manufacturing companies recognize the potential of services as one of the few sustainable competitive advantages they can develop. The course focuses on the customers, listening to customer requirements and developing customer-defined services standards, aligning strategy and service design, delivering and performing service and managing service promises. Product Management: The course intends to develop the competence of the participants in dealing with issues of Brand management, new product development and launch and product policy and management. Retailing Management ( 0.5 credit): This course builds on the participants understanding of Channels of Distribution acquired in Marketing I and II courses, which covered value delivery. A strategic approach will be taken to Retail Management. This will enable the participants to become good retail planners and decision makers and help focus on change and adaptation to change. Investment Management: The course is structured around investment management process, knowledge of which is essential both to the users and suppliers of funds. It strives to familiarize the students with Capital Markets, Valuation Techniques for Securities, and analysis of Risk and Return implications of various investment decisions. The coverage includes: functioning of stock markets; fundamental and technical analysis; fixed income securities; efficiency of stock markets; mean - variance analysis of portfolios of assets; asset pricing models; performance of managed funds.
Corporate Valuation: With a large number of our students seeking careers in security analysis and consultancy organizations, it is imperative that they acquire a deep understanding of the importance, mechanics, uses and implications of firms/corporate value. Though basically rooted in the Finance stream the course would strive to build the natural linkage with corporate strategy. New Venture Planning: Till the early nineties, entrepreneurs in India were operating in an environment protected by the government policies. With the liberalization of Indian economy, the domestic markets are getting integrated with the international markets at an increasing pace, leading to tough competition. This calls for not only high levels of efficiency right from implementation stage of a project to remaining cost effective, but also calls for strengthening existing entrepreneurs and developing a cadre of well-groomed and competent entrepreneurs who would meet the challenges posed by a fiercely competitive business environment. While the management students are well trained in modern management practices, they lack entrepreneurial orientation, competencies and comprehension. They are not adequately exposed to and aware of the intricacies involved in launching and managing a business.
This course is offered to meet such needs of the students. It will facilitate them in acquiring an integrated understanding of all the management areas needed from conception to implementation of a business idea. Corporate Governance and Strategy (0.5 Credit): This new elective course predominantly draws on the interlinkages between corporate governance, corporate vision, strategic choices and strategy implementation on one hand, and the roles of the Board and Top Management on the other in a 'market capitalization economy'. It seeks to address the leadership and compliance issues in pursuing the objectives of shareholder wealth creation while balancing the needs of other stakeholders. The course is useful for students interested in pursuing careers in strategy consulting firms, management academics, chartered accountancy, company secretary-ship, etc. and those likely to take charge of their family business. It will also be useful to students generally interested in the dynamics of strategic decision-making, communication process between the senior management and Board members, and appointment, performance evaluation and compensation of CEOs. Managing Global Competition: This is an advanced and state-of-the-art course in the field of Strategic Management designed at the intersection of international business strategy, global business environment, MNC operations, and the new economics of knowledge-intellectual capital management within the paradigm of converging and web-based technologies, increasing liberalization under WTO regime, and ‘winner-takes-all’. The course systematically studies innovation-fostering corporate strategies, strategies for competing globally, learning and flexible organizational structures, and finally, develops a framework for auditing firm-level global competitiveness. Organizational Issue in New Venture: An increasing number of new ventures is being set up by first time entrepreneurs, established family owned and family managed houses as well as professional organisations both domestic and multinational. BUSINESS ENVIRONMENT
Industrial Economics and Business Strategy: The objective of this course is to acquaint students with the important theoretical concepts of industrial economics and explain the relevance of these concepts for developing effective business strategy. Industrial economics deals with the economic problems and behaviour of firms and industries. It examines the famous structure- conduct – performance paradigm according to which market structure (the number of sellers in the market, their degree of product differentiation, the cost structure, the degree of vertical integration with suppliers and so on) determines conduct (which consists of price, R and D, investment, advertising and so forth) and conduct yields market performance (efficiency, ratio of price to marginal cost, innovation rate, profits, distribution). This link gives the basic framework for the study of economic behaviour of the firm and industry in the market. It need not be unidirectional running from the structure to the performance but may also operate in the reverse way or may be segmented showing cross links between any two of the three aspects – structure, conduct and performance. The course would cover topics like product differentiation; advertising strategy; pricing decisions; growth of the firm; diversification, vertical integration & merger; market structure and profitability; R & D and innovation etc. The aim of the course would be to familiarise prospective managers about the importance of knowledge of these concepts in successful business decision making. Econometrics: This FPM level course starts with a broad sweep of linear algebra and statistics that gives the background. Then the subject starts with classical multiple regression model with model complexities because of the existence of multicollinearity, heteroskedasticity and autocorrelation. Then comes simultaneous equation models with problems of estimation. Also specific problems of regression like lagged variables, dummy variable technique and limited dependent variables will be covered. Some new areas of econometrics have been developed like time series models dealing with stationarity and cointegration, ARCH and GARCH models, and panel data analysis – all these are also part of the course. The course requires empirical estimation of the models for the solution of the assigned problems with software like SHAZAM.

Business Environment: The purpose of the course is to sensitize the students towards the overall business environment in the Indian economy within which an organization has to function. The course has an integrated nature with inputs ranging over social, political and economic systems of the country. The course also emphasizes implications of these aspects for decision making by individual managers. In view of the growing trend towards globalisation, special stress is put on the geo-political considerations while discussing the emerging business environment.

Computer facilites:
The Computer Centre is housed in a spacious 15,000 sq. ft., two floored, air conditioned, centrally located and functionally designed building and is equipped with the state-of-the-art computing resources to cater to the needs of the academic as well as the administrative activities of the Institute. The infrastructure at IIML Computer Centre includes a fiber optic backbone based campus-wide network connecting machines on heterogeneous platforms with several servers. The network provides accessibility of 1300 nodes to each of these servers for sharing different hardware and software resources.
The hardware resources of the Institute include computers (from Pentium to Xeon), heavy duty printers and scanners. The software resources include a wide variety of word processing packages, spread sheets, databases, case tools, expert systems, high level programming language compilers, visual programming software, statistical, modeling or OR packages and Industrial Databases
All buildings including the hostels, i.e the Faculty Block, the Academic Block, the Computer Centre and the Library are connected through a fast ethernet-switched network.
All components in the Institute are connected to the internet through STPI and VSNL 1 Mbps each. All students are provided with an email account and sufficient storage space on joining the Institute and a round the clock access to the internet from their respective rooms.
Special Facilities
As part of its efforts to develop centers of excellence in different areas of management, the Institute is setting up specialized facilities to support its teaching, research, and training activities.
·The Institute has set up a Manufacturing Management Decision Support Laboratory, consisting of a PC-based LAN comprising a Pentium NT Server, four Pentium nodes, networking, printing etc. the scope of the laboratory was enhanced to total Enterprise Management, with the addition of a high-end server. The manufacturing decision environments are created using state-of-the-art software such as the “Taylor—II for Windows” Manufacturing Simulator, “Arena Professional Edition” Simulation software, “MPX” Rapid Modeling Package, “Factory Planning System” Layout Design suite, “Production The TOC Way” Scheduling Simulation Game etc. The software are used to study the analysis, design and operation of Manufacturing Systems.

The curriculum is designed to impart knowledge and skills considered essential for managers to operate successfully in the increasingly dynamic and complex environment. It sharpens and deepens the student's understanding at different levels:

It helps the student acquire conceptual and analytical abilities required for making and implementing managerial decisions effectively.
The First Year academic work, spread over three terms, is a compulsory package of 22 foundation (core) courses designed to provide basic knowledge of concepts, tools and techniques in various functional areas and relevant disciplines.
The two-month compulsory Summer Training in industrial and business organisations follows the first year course work. The summer training is aimed at providing exposure to the real life working environment. Students are required to work on specific, time-bound organisation related assignments.
The Second Year academic work, spread over three terms, comprises two compulsory courses of integrative nature along with a package of 15 elective courses of advanced and applied nature. These provide students the opportunity to develop in depth understanding and concentration in the areas of their special interest. The students can also take up to two Courses of Independent Study (CIS) as elective, or one Dissertation Project which is equivalent to two elective courses spread over Term-V and Term-VI.

Marketing Management I: This first course on Marketing Management introduces the important role of marketing in the company. Major topics covered in the first course are : Analyzing the marketing environment and consumer behavior; identifying market segments and selecting target markets; differentiating and positioning the market offer; developing , testing and launching new products and services; managing product life cycles and strategies; managing product lines and brands and designing pricing strategies and programs.
Marketing Management II : This course provides additional concepts in Marketing in areas related to distribution and selection of channels, modern retailing, integrated marketing communication, advertising and sales promotion. Financial Management II: The course is designed to provide an understanding of the financial policies and issues of an organization. Information Technology for Management: The phenomenal growth of information technology usage in almost all types of organizations has created tremendous change in methods and procedures in information collection and dissemination techniques, in management control processes, and in decision making activities. In fact, most of the functional areas of corporate world, require managers with capabilities to effectively utilize information technology.
This introductory course on Information Technology exposes students to the present day capabilities and limitations of Information Technology. The course provides exposure and basic familiarity with the increasingly prevalent paradigm of Visual Programming: where a user works with a library of pre-fabricated objects and functions, ties them together with logic using visual techniques to produce a program to achieve the desired application results.
Management Information Systems: The course is designed to enable the students to appreciate the role of information systems in managerial decision making; familiarize them with information systems design methodologies, hardware/ software tools and technology available for implementation of effective organizational information systems. It helps them to appreciate the critical role of managers in design of effective information systems.
BUSINESS ENVIRONMENT
Economics I: The first of the two courses in Economics aims at familiarizing the students with the fundamental economic principles in the context of managerial decision making. It deals with micro economic issues involving households and firms, mainly in the areas of Demand and Supply; Production and Cost of Firms; and Price/Output Decisions by firms under varying market conditions.
Economics II: This is a course in macroeconomics, with a focus on the economy as a whole in aggregate terms rather than on the micro units. Advanced Marketing Research: The objective of this course is to make the students familiar with advanced marketing research tools commonly used in marketing and consumer behaviour research. The contents include: Advertising Budget Decisions (Regression Analysis); Marketing Strategy Formulation (Discriminant Analysis); Questionnaire Development and Advertising Theme Decisions (Factor Analysis); Market Segmentation (Cluster Analysis); Brand and Product Line Decisions (Conjoint Analysis); Strategy Formulation (Multidimensional Scaling).
Promotional Strategy: The Promotional Strategy course will focus on the dual aspects of promotion and advertising decisions and the strategy issues related to these areas. Ad campaign planning will emphasize the creative strategy and media issues. The course will focus on advertising as a medium of communication used by advertisers to increase the persuasive effect of their messages on consumer markets. To this effect, ad copy appeals will be analyzed in detail to ensure that the student of advertising understands the dynamics of ad messages.
Media characteristics will be discussed for their relevance to media selection and scheduling campaigns. The sales promotion component will highlight the promotional techniques used in promoting to consumers and dealers, namely exhibitions, contests, use of coupons, packaging and point-of-purchase displays.
Sales and Distribution Management: The objective of the course is to familiarize students with theories, concepts, techniques and practices related to Sales and Distribution Management. The first part of the course covers Selling and Sales Management, and consists of three modules which deal with selling skills, mid-career sales challenges and advanced sales management.
The second part covers Distribution management and also consists of three modules dealing with the decisions relating to the retail front end, channel intermediaries, and company objectives. The course is aimed at participants who desire to take up a career in marketing, although it will also be very useful for those considering careers in finance and systems.
Customer Relationship Management: The emerging business logic – be it in the Indian or the global environment – has distinctly moved towards underscoring a never before importance of delighting the customer. Bonding with them at every step of the way, and retaining them for a greater profitability has become an organizational priority. Services Marketing: Interest in improving the management of service businesses continues to accelerate. As a result, there is a larger store of knowledge available on service management, not only in marketing but also in functions that necessarily interact with marketing, such as human resources and operations. The economies of the world are now dominated by services. Furthermore, manufacturing companies recognize the potential of services as one of the few sustainable competitive advantages they can develop. New Venture Planning: Till the early nineties, entrepreneurs in India were operating in an environment protected by the government policies. With the liberalization of Indian economy, the domestic markets are getting integrated with the international markets at an increasing pace, leading to tough competition. This calls for not only high levels of efficiency right from implementation stage of a project to remaining cost effective, but also calls for strengthening existing entrepreneurs and developing a cadre of well-groomed and competent entrepreneurs who would meet the challenges posed by a fiercely competitive business environment. While the management students are well trained in modern management practices, they lack entrepreneurial orientation, competencies and comprehension. They are not adequately exposed to and aware of the intricacies involved in launching and managing a business.

It seeks to address the leadership and compliance issues in pursuing the objectives of shareholder wealth creation while balancing the needs of other stakeholders. The course is useful for students interested in pursuing careers in strategy consulting firms, management academics, chartered accountancy, company secretary-ship, etc. and those likely to take charge of their family business. It will also be useful to students generally interested in the dynamics of strategic decision-making, communication process between the senior management and Board members, and appointment, performance evaluation and compensation of CEOs. Managing Global Competition: This is an advanced and state-of-the-art course in the field of Strategic Management designed at the intersection of international business strategy, global business environment, MNC operations, and the new economics of knowledge-intellectual capital management within the paradigm of converging and web-based technologies, increasing liberalization under WTO regime, and ‘winner-takes-all’. The course systematically studies innovation-fostering corporate strategies, strategies for competing globally, learning and flexible organizational structures, and finally, develops a framework for auditing firm-level global competitiveness. Team Building: Interdependence is a common feature of large and complex organisations. Effectiveness of organisations, therefore, depends on team work at different levels. This course is designed to explore the various facts of team work and to acquire understanding and skills for development of effective teams in organisations. This course will explore factors which determine effectiveness of teams; understand the concept of team leadership, skills needed for team effectiveness e.g. problem solving, decision making, communication and conflict resolution, the role of empowerment; culture for team building inter-departmental coordination with a focus of internal customer orientation and diagnosing the team effectiveness and strategies for improving team effectiveness.
Business Ethics: With globalisation and the spread of multinational organisations, managers have to work with diverse communities, technologies, and markets. Each presents its own ethical dilemmas and demands. This course is designed to sensitise the students to such demands and to understand the ethical underpinnings of various business approaches. Leadership Development: The course is designed to explore what leaders really do to meet adaptive challenges in their environment. It looks at leadership as a process of self-transformation and organizational renewal. Taking a descriptive as well as prescriptive approach, the course distinguishes between leadership and management. Building on shared leadership experiences of students, this course will create a model of leadership that addresses key competencies required to succeed in a complex, knowledge driven environment. At the end of the course students are expected to gain insight into the foundational values that determine the leader- behaviour; action choices for leaders who have to engage in adaptive work in organizations; and development and dispersal of leadership within organization and community. The course would have inputs on themes such as, leadership versus management; technical versus adaptive challenges of leadership, value-based leadership model, leadership evolution, converting knowledge into action, creating synergy, transformational leadership, development and dispersal of leadership, Indian leadership experiences.
Organizational Issue in New Venture: An increasing number of new ventures is being set up by first time entrepreneurs, established family owned and family managed houses as well as professional organisations both domestic and multinational. The course is designed to address some of the critical organisational issues that are encountered in such settings. The course shall cover these such as: issues of ownership and control; structuring and managing of new ventures; system building; culture building; and management of transitions from project to a stable organisation. Database Management Systems: Database Management Systems (DBMS) technology is a key technology used worldwide for data management and system integration. Software Risk Management: This course focuses in general to software risk management. Various models of software risk is introduced in the course. The range of potential uses and organisation aplications will also be discussed. The concepts of software failure fault, reliable and risk are the addressed in the course.
The three most important software product characteristics are quality, cost and schedule. These attributes are primary of user oriented rather than developers oriented attributes. Software Risk Management, is probebly the most important characteristics inherent in the concept " Software Quality" which can seen with the developers. The quality and the associated cost will be also discussed in the course.
Internet Commerce: The role of internet commerce can be overemphasized in coming decades especially at a time when the connectivity to Network and the number of people with access to Internet is growing at astonishing pace. The transition from traditional commerce to the electronic commerce improves the efficiency of both the internal and external processes, and hence the advantages offered are applicable to almost every organization. In order to transition the current businesses from traditional to Internet era, it becomes imperative to understand not only what internet commerce is all about advantages, caveats and business models, but also the complete framework and technologies that are required for enabling the transition to internet commerce. The course covers the framework of electronic commerce and examines the exposes students to various technologies – Network, Information Distribution, Multimedia Publishing, Security and Payment – that enable the electronic commerce.
BUSINESS ENVIRONMENT
Industrial Economics and Business Strategy: The objective of this course is to acquaint students with the important theoretical concepts of industrial economics and explain the relevance of these concepts for developing effective business strategy. Industrial economics deals with the economic problems and behaviour of firms and industries. It examines the famous structure- conduct – performance paradigm according to which market structure (the number of sellers in the market, their degree of product differentiation, the cost structure, the degree of vertical integration with suppliers and so on) determines conduct (which consists of price, R and D, investment, advertising and so forth) and conduct yields market performance (efficiency, ratio of price to marginal cost, innovation rate, profits, distribution). This link gives the basic framework for the study of economic behaviour of the firm and industry in the market. It need not be unidirectional running from the structure to the performance but may also operate in the reverse way or may be segmented showing cross links between any two of the three aspects – structure, conduct and performance. The course would cover topics like product differentiation; advertising strategy; pricing decisions; growth of the firm; diversification, vertical integration & merger; market structure and profitability; R & D and innovation etc. The aim of the course would be to familiarise prospective managers about the importance of knowledge of these concepts in successful business decision making. (0.5 Credit)
Econometrics: This FPM level course starts with a broad sweep of linear algebra and statistics that gives the background. Then the subject starts with classical multiple regression model with model complexities because of the existence of multicollinearity, heteroskedasticity and autocorrelation. Then comes simultaneous equation models with problems of estimation. Also specific problems of regression like lagged variables, dummy variable technique and limited dependent variables will be covered. Some new areas of econometrics have been developed like time series models dealing with stationarity and cointegration, ARCH and GARCH models, and panel data analysis – all these are also part of the course. The course requires empirical estimation of the models for the solution of the assigned problems with software like SHAZAM.

Business Environment: The purpose of the course is to sensitize the students towards the overall business environment in the Indian economy within which an organization has to function. The course has an integrated nature with inputs ranging over social, political and economic systems of the country. The course also emphasizes implications of these aspects for decision making by individual managers. In view of the growing trend towards globalisation, special stress is put on the geo-political considerations while discussing the emerging business environment.
Strategic Management: The objectives of Strategic Management course are to introduce the students to the concept of Strategic Management, to develop in them a corporate perspective, to provide them with one integrative skills to identify and address the inter-functional problems/issues in organisations of different complexities, and to provide them with the conceptual and analytical frameworks available for the purpose. The course is in two parts, covering strategy formulation and implementation issues respectively. Computer facilites:
The Computer Centre is housed in a spacious 15,000 sq. ft., two floored, air conditioned, centrally located and functionally designed building and is equipped with the state-of-the-art computing resources to cater to the needs of the academic as well as the administrative activities of the Institute. The infrastructure at IIML Computer Centre includes a fiber optic backbone based campus-wide network connecting machines on heterogeneous platforms with several servers. The network provides accessibility of 1300 nodes to each of these servers for sharing different hardware and software resources.
The hardware resources of the Institute include computers (from Pentium to Xeon), heavy duty printers and scanners. The software resources include a wide variety of word processing packages, spread sheets, databases, case tools, expert systems, high level programming language compilers, visual programming software, statistical, modeling or OR packages and Industrial Databases
All buildings including the hostels, i.e the Faculty Block, the Academic Block, the Computer Centre and the Library are connected through a fast ethernet-switched network.
All components in the Institute are connected to the internet through STPI and VSNL 1 Mbps each. All students are provided with an email account and sufficient storage space on joining the Institute and a round the clock access to the internet from their respective rooms.
Special Facilities
As part of its efforts to develop centers of excellence in different areas of management, the Institute is setting up specialized facilities to support its teaching, research, and training activities.
·The Institute has set up a Manufacturing Management Decision Support Laboratory, consisting of a PC-based LAN comprising a Pentium NT Server, four Pentium nodes, networking, printing etc. the scope of the laboratory was enhanced to total Enterprise Management, with the addition of a high-end server. The manufacturing decision environments are created using state-of-the-art software such as the “Taylor—II for Windows” Manufacturing Simulator, “Arena Professional Edition” Simulation software, “MPX” Rapid Modeling Package, “Factory Planning System” Layout Design suite, “Production The TOC Way” Scheduling Simulation Game etc. The software are used to study the analysis, design and operation of Manufacturing Systems.
·An Information Technology and Software Management Laboratory has been established to provide state-of-the-art software development methodologies, including net based application to the students. This laboratory comprises RS/6000 [AIX UNIX] with 5 Pentium nodes with internet connectivity.
·A laboratory for carrying out research on advanced methodologies for marketing has been set up with exclusive state-of-the-art computing power.
·An exclusive computer based teaching/training laboratory has been set up to simulate the class room teaching environment (virtual campus). The products of the laboratory will be made available to the ALL INDIA COUNCIL OF TECHNICAL DEDUCATION (AICTE) approved institutions.

Teaching Programs
The main thrust of training is to imbibe a sense of strategic outlook to management problems in the students. In 1994, the two-year full-time PGDCM was started, which fulfils the demand for global business managers, by reorienting management education to keep pace with the changing needs of the world. It is a distinctive program with special emphasis on Information Technology (IT) and its application to business. This three year PGDBM is an evening program, also launched in 1994, to offer working executives the opportunity to gain insights into various facets of management. The FPM offers an opportunity for full-time advanced study and research at doctoral level in management and related areas.

One of the biggest strengths of the Institute is its world renowned faculty. The faculty members have distinguished academic achievements in different areas of management and the related basic disciplines and are actively involved in teaching, training, research and consulting. They carry out consultancy assignments to keep in touch with the real-life management problems in public and private corporations, financial institutions, government agencies and international agencies.
This dynamic learning process at IIMC enriches teaching and training activities of the faculty. It also helps development of case studies and identification of directions of research relevant for business and industry.
IIMC has about 70 faculty members belonging to one or more of the following groups and centers: Behavioural Science, Economics, Environment, Finance & Control, Marketing, Management Information Systems, Operations Management, Personnel Management & Industrial Relations, Resource Management, Regional Development, Sociology, Strategic Management, Management Center for Human Values, Center for Development and Environment Policy.
Facilities
The 135-acre campus of the Institute has a cluster of Administrative and Faculty Office Blocks, fully equipped classrooms, seminar and conference rooms, Management Center for Human Values, residential quarters for students, faculty and staff members, library, an executive training complex, a bank and a post office. The 750-seat state-of-the-art Auditorium is the latest addition to the campus.
The presence of the lush trees and seven lakes makes the campus picturesque and well endowed.
The B.C.Roy Memorial Library of the Institute, which started with a liberal Ford Foundation grant, has grown over the years, keeping pace with the development of the Institute, developments in the area of the library and the services and the changing information needs of the users. The library is considered as one of the major management libraries in South Asia.
IIMC is an acknowledged leader in computing resource and applications. The Institute's computer Center has emerged as a center of excellence in the area of Computer Applications in Management. The campus wide LAN encompasses 1000 nodes/workstations. LAN connectivity is available in each room in the students' hostels, providing the students with 24-hour access to resources like the local network and the Internet from the comfort of their rooms.
Placements
The Institute's Placement Bureau arranges on-campus interviews for all students at the end of their second year. IIMC is also responsible for assigning students to summer projects at the end of the first year, where the students learn the practicalities in the industry by applying the theoretical concepts learnt in class. Last year, IIMC recorded the highest placements amongst all the IIMs.
Student Life
IIMC has a vibrant student community. Seminars, business school meets, sports and cultural events are regular features of the campus life. Student initiative is encouraged and a large number of clubs and societies are run by students.

1. Colloquia Cell
Top-level practicing managers and distinguished business leaders grace the IIM Calcutta Colloquia Series. These guest lectures present students with an opportunity to acquire a true picture of present day management issues. Eminent personalities have included Indra Nooyi - President, Pepsico, Ms. Kiran Bedi, Sir Swaraj Paul, Kapil Dev, Ajit Balakrishnan and Late J.R.D. Tata amongst others.
2. CSI-IIMC Student Branch
There has been a paradigm shift in the way the businesses are managed now and the infusion of technology in the management has made it imperative for budding manager to possess the know-how of the fast-changing technology. We, as a CENTER FOR TECHNO-MANAGEMENT, answer to the needs of wannabe managers through various activities like seminars by eminent personalities, conducting workshops, organizing paper contests, national events, management games, etc.
3. Dramatics Cell
The Dramatics cell at IIM Calcutta is a team of young dramatists with a passion for theatre. The last academic year saw two major productions being performed. With more than two months of hard work, each play was a night to remember for the budding talent and the audience alike. This year the cell co-organized the Cul-fest 'Carpe-Diem 2005', which featured a number of riveting performances like ‘Inherit the Wind’, an IIMC Dramatics Cell production, Skits, street plays and the guest college play by St. Xavier - Waiting for Godot.. The grand finale was ‘Dance Like a Man’ – a play in two acts by Lillete Dubey. The cell believes in carrying this tradition forward and setting new benchmarks every year. The spellbound audience, of course, has just one word to say - Encore!

This organization is focused on nurturing the entrepreneurial spirit among the leaders of the future generation. Towards fostering this spirit they are organizing i2i- Ideas to Implementation, an international Business Plan Competition, the largest of it's kind in Asia. Students from more than 200 institutes (both India and abroad) are taking part in the competition, have been received entries from B-Schools like MIT, Stanford and Kellogg. Apart from this, the cell also organizes workshops and talks on entrepreneurship from time to time. To summarize their efforts, the cell itself is truly a classic example of Entrepreneurship at its best.
5. Finance Club
As part of their quest for co-curricular learning, a large number of students at IIMC have formed an association that forms a stage for interaction for students, academicians and professionals from the corporate world. The Finance and Investments Club of IIM Calcutta tries to take the students to the doorsteps of the professional world; be it via Dhan, its annual magazine, which features articles and research publications from the students themselves, or via the annual Finance festival - Options.It also runs online trading games which help hone the skills of future investment bankers and portfolio analysts. The Finance Club lends IIM Calcutta its version of Wall Street.
6. IMZ IMZ, the IIM Calcutta eZine, is an online “Management-zine”. It provides the perfect platform for the exchange of ideas, thoughts and "fundas". IMZ is all about exploring the Art and Science of Management and features interesting articles by students.

The Initiative for Community Action is IIM Calcutta’s way of returning a part of its dues to society. It is a platform that helps raise both students and Non profit Organizations. At the moment, INCA is the largest Student club in IIM Calcutta with a membership of over 100 students. While acting as a means to sensitize students to the socio-economic problems facing a large part the Indian populace, it also exposes them to real time, on-hand consulting experiences. INCA is a tribute from us to society.
8. ISG - Internet Solutions Group The IIM Calcutta website and its Extranet are the lifelines for communication and interaction for Students, Faculty, Alumni and Corporates. The Internet Solutions Group spearheads the development of cutting-edge technology for the IIM Calcutta website and performs support activities. It has defined entrepreneurial effort, as seen in the developing e-networks of IIM Calcutta. ISG is a team of 30 students driving this innovation and development, hoping to transform the current campus into a Wired one.

The global economy has opened up a plethora of avenues for the Indian consumer. Previously, she had to make do with what was available, for lack of choice. Today, it is not the same anymore. Consumer goods are jostling for shelf space, positioning themselves as the answers to her needs, to create the conditions necessary for the all-important deed- the sale. In an attempt to find answers to these vexing issues, the students of the Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta have got together to embark on a voyage of discovery. Today, the cell plays a key role in the activities at IIM Calcutta, through organization of case contests, workshops conducted by the leaders in the field, throughout the year, with the grand finale being the annual marketing fair Kalpataru. They aim at augmenting the classroom experiences with practical, hands on learning in the real life, something essential for any would be marketing whiz of the future.
10. Quizzing Club
A part of the cultural wing, the IIMC "Kweej" club is essentially defined by the precocious achievements of some of the country's legendary quizzers. And quizzing is as entrenched a tradition here as parties. It goes back to the days of 'seeding quizzes' during the early batches, some of which used to be conducted by the likes of Neil O'Brien - the original patriarch of this mental gymnastics. To keep count of achievements is no mean task, IIM Calcutta teams have been winners of popular quiz shows like Quiz Time, finalists of Mastermind India and several other high octane quizzes in open events across the country. Their latest triumph has been at "Nihilanth", the inter IIM-IIT Quiz, where they floored the competition. Internally the IIM Calcutta quizzing calendar is made up of a number of quizzes many of which are currently championed by our students. BBC Mastermind, watch this space!
11. The Consulting Club
The Consulting Club, IIM Calcutta is a student-run, corporate-facilitated and faculty-guided student body of IIM Calcutta. It was setup with an objective of benefiting the students' community through consulting events, live industry consulting projects, seminars, workshops and other student activities. Besides organising several national level events every year, it has now taken the lead in forming an International Consulting Consortium which includes consulting clubs from the likes of the Kellogg School of Management, UCLA (Anderson School of Management),London Business School (LBS), Peter F. Drucker Graduate School Of Business,University of Western Ontario (Richard Ivey School Of Business) and University of Melbourne (Melbourne Business School), among a host of others. Now, that is truely international!
Sports
Now this is serious stuff. Our main sports meet is the annual IIMC-XLRI meet and to us that is war! Man, woman alike know their individual and team limits but every year, we have seen these being surpassed. From cricket to Table tennis to basketball to carom, all combat areas are explored. Our intra-hostel festival,the World War, sets the tone for this event.We also have the IIM C- STEP sports meet with the students of the STudent Exchange Programme, who come form top B-schools across the world. Participating in tournaments throughout the country, the sports department of IIM Calcutta has always done it proud. We play to win and we like it that way!

JBS BaroC
JBS BaroC is an institution within IIMC. It remains something that Alumni from decades back still relate to and cherish. It is really a metaphor for all the good times that one spends at IIMC. Ask any IIM-Cian, "How would you like to unwind after a grueling week?" A whopping majority would reply by saying that they would want a JBS-BaroC night; the music, the atmosphere, and the "refreshments" form the trio that tranquilizes the "trauma" undergone in the past few days. Thus, a JBS BaroC show happens at just the 'right time'. Picture this..take a bunch of avid music lovers, add to them a host of extremely talented musicians, fill in the stands , turn the volume loud , throw in a mix of music from every possible genre, pepper all this with life , love and lots of soul.. what you get is what we call JBS-BaroC . You've got to be there to know what it's really like.
